We would like to provide an update on the eighth-term Legislative Council (LegCo) election held on 7 December 2025.
According to the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council (HKMAO), the election was conducted in a safe, orderly and smooth manner, with voter turnout across the Election Committee subsectors, functional constituencies and geographical constituencies showing a notable increase compared with the previous term. The HKMAO noted that this broad level of participation reflects public confidence in the current electoral arrangements and represents continued progress in the development of high‑quality democracy in Hong Kong.
The HKMAO further highlighted that the successful completion of the election demonstrated Hong Kong society’s unity, resilience and collective ability to overcome challenges—particularly in the wake of the recent Tai Po fire incident. The coordinated efforts of the HKSAR Government, community stakeholders and members of the public ensured that the election proceeded smoothly, underscoring Hong Kong’s capability to maintain order and stability under pressure.
The new-term Legislative Council comprises both incumbent and newly elected members from diverse professional, sectoral and community backgrounds. This diversity is expected to broaden policy perspectives, strengthen representativeness and enhance the Council’s capacity to respond to social needs. The HKMAO expressed confidence that the new-term LegCo will continue to fully and faithfully implement “one country, two systems,” support Hong Kong’s long‑term development and deepen the city’s integration into the Greater Bay Area, contributing to economic advancement and improvements to people’s livelihoods.
