Activation of Alert Response Level under Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan

The HKSAR Government announced on 17 May 2026 the activation of the Alert Response Level under the Preparedness and Response Plan for Ebola Virus Disease, following the World Health Organization’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern relating to the outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease (an Ebola strain) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

As of 16 May 2026, confirmed and suspected cases have been reported in the affected regions. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for this strain.  No confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Hong Kong to date.

Prevention and Control Measures

Although there are no direct flights between the affected regions and Hong Kong, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has strengthened precautionary measures, including:

  • Enhanced health screening for passengers arriving on flights from Africa
  • Immediate referral of suspected cases to public hospitals for isolation and testing
  • Strengthened health education at boundary control points
  • Issuing alerts to doctors and hospitals to remain vigilant

Members are advised that travellers should:

  • Avoid non-essential travel to affected areas
  • Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene when travelling, including:
